Since joining Ridgeline in November 2020, Senior Residential Project Manager Chas Duke has played an important role in guiding homeowners through the custom home building process while helping the company continue to grow and evolve.
We sat down with Chas to learn more about his career journey, what drives his passion for residential construction, and what makes Ridgeline such a unique place to work.
From Commercial Construction to Custom Homes
After graduating from Clemson University in 2014 with a degree in Business Management, Chas knew he wanted a career that would allow him to be hands-on and see the results of his work firsthand. His first role selling industrial air conditioning equipment introduced him to the construction industry and sparked an interest that would shape his career.
From there, Chas spent five years in commercial construction, gradually taking on greater responsibilities and managing increasingly complex projects. While he enjoyed the work and gained valuable experience, he found himself drawn to a different side of the industry.
That opportunity came unexpectedly during a ski trip in Colorado, where he connected with Ridgeline founder Ray Foral. The two stayed in touch, and when an opportunity opened up at Ridgeline, Chas knew it was the right fit. Five years later, he still believes it was one of the best decisions of his career.
Building Relationships Through Custom Homes
For Chas, one of the biggest differences between commercial and residential construction is the people. One of his favorite parts of the job is watching homeowners experience the excitement of seeing their dream home come to life.
“Homeowners are excited because they’re going to live there one day and enjoy it,” Chas said. “Maintaining those relationships and seeing how excited they get every time they visit the site is awesome.”
Many of those relationships continue long after construction is complete. Homeowners often stay in touch, sharing updates and memories from the homes they worked together to create. That personal connection is what continues to motivate Chas and makes residential construction especially rewarding.
Leading Projects with Integrity
As a Senior Residential Project Manager, Chas wears many hats. He works with clients early in the design process, helping establish preliminary budgets and guiding important decisions to ensure homeowners achieve their vision while staying aligned with their goals.
He also manages several active projects while mentoring newer team members and helping them learn the Ridgeline experience. One principle guides everything he does: “Always do what you’d do if it were your own home.”
Whether it’s a budget discussion, a construction detail, or a homeowner interaction, Chas believes in doing things the right way, even when the easier solution might go unnoticed.
He recalls a project in which a newly installed front door slightly rubbed against a nearby stone. While the issue was minor and could have easily been overlooked, the team removed and reinstalled the door to correct it properly. “If it’s not the right way to do things, we’re going to fix it,” he said.
That commitment to craftsmanship and accountability reflects the values that define Ridgeline’s reputation.
Bringing Unique Ideas to Life
Over the years, Chas has worked on a wide range of custom homes and renovations, each with its own challenges and opportunities. One recent project involved transforming an unfinished basement into a fully customized golf simulator. Starting with a blank space and very little direction, the team worked closely with the homeowner to develop a design that ultimately became one of the home’s most unique features.
Another memorable renovation converted an underutilized area of a Lake Keowee home into a screened porch and golf cart garage while successfully incorporating an outdoor swim spa that initially seemed difficult to accommodate.
Chas has also been involved in creating specialty spaces, ranging from outdoor entertainment areas to highly customized storage rooms tailored to clients’ personal hobbies and interests.
“Every project has something different I’m proud of,” he said. “It’s rewarding to watch an idea become reality and see how much homeowners enjoy the finished product.”
Growing Alongside Ridgeline
Since joining the company in 2020, Chas has witnessed significant growth throughout Ridgeline. The scale and complexity of projects have continued to evolve, with homeowners seeking increasingly customized features and luxury amenities.
At the same time, the company has embraced new technology and systems that improve efficiency and communication throughout the building process. Despite that growth, one thing has remained unchanged. “We’ve managed to maintain that small-company feel and team environment,” Chas said.
That culture extends beyond the office and jobsite. Team members regularly spend time together outside of work, whether through hunting trips, company events, or gatherings with their families.
Looking Ahead
As Ridgeline continues to grow, Chas is focused on helping the next generation of team members develop their skills while continuing to elevate the client experience. “The goal is to keep building incredible homes and maintain the excellence our clients have come to expect,” he said.
By sharing his knowledge and learning from others, he hopes to help Ridgeline continue improving while staying true to the values that have made the company successful.
Life Outside of Work
When he’s not managing projects, Chas can usually be found outdoors. As the oldest of eight children, he grew up hunting, fishing, hiking, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Today, he shares that passion with his wife and their young daughter.
“If it’s not raining or nighttime, I want to be outside,” he said. Whether they’re spending time on Lake Keowee, visiting the coast, or enjoying a weekend adventure, Chas is grateful that his family shares his love for the outdoors.
A Passion for Building
After five years with Ridgeline, Chas remains energized by the work, the people, and the opportunity to help homeowners bring their visions to life. “I wake up, and I’m excited to come to work,” he said. “We work hard, but we also make time for our families and enjoy what we do. There’s nothing bad I could say about working here.”
